Blackwater

album: Emilia
Written by: Emilia Dahlin

Seemed just the same
As any other night
When something pulled me from my bed.
Stepped out on the porch into the early morning light,
Knowing that something wasn’t right, wasn’t right.

For days if had been raining
The creek began to swell
No one said a word.
The darlings of the company said the dam would surely hold,
As the murky liquid inched up to the lip,
To the lip.

Everything the hills had spilled all gathered black as tar
In the only home that we had every known.
All I know, is that the rain was more than it could hold.
The hollow would never be the same,
Be the same.

Blackwater’s running through these mines that we’ve made
Blackwater’s running through the hills
Blackwater’s coming, just to take my baby boy,
And carry him far, far away,
Far away.

Rock dust has almost killed me
Turned me out in the rain
Now rock dust has settled on my lungs
And causes constant pain.
It killed two fellow workers
Out here in Ol’ Pardee,
And Lord, I love the hills,
But now the mountain’s killing me

Lord, have mercy! Grab the kids!
And head for higher ground.
Like Jericho, its all come crashing down.
The only land I stand on is no longer
solid ground.
And the only ones I've ever loved are gone,
They're all gone.

Chorus

Now I see I should’ve listened to my lady, Norma Jean.
She said, “Henry, you choose the mines or me!”.
But she end up caving in
Just like the mountain walls.
Now I’m the saddest man you ever seen,
Ever seen.

Chorus
